The aircraft carrier deck crew wore N-1 deck jackets during World War II and the Korean War. The thick cotton shell and alpaca or wool lining gave the deck crew the needed warmth and protection from the elements during extreme cold weather conditions. U.S. Navy produced the initial series in Navy blue to symbolize the Navy before changing to Khaki.

Problem 1 is their QC may accept a deviation of an inch within a batch. Problem 2 is finding the exact same batch because some makers are known to revise their cutting from one lot to another. For example, Real McCoy's Navy N-1 is slimmer and longer than their Khaki N-1 and then the special edition is completely different in cutting to those two.

Developed in 1943, the N1 system comprised of the now famous deck jacket, a bib and brace overall and a soft 'helmet' with a peaked front. All pieces could be worn independently of one another, or paired with other uniforms items as necessary. The helmet featured a bold 'USN' stamp on the rear neck covering, with a chinstrap and peaked front.
